Oswald "White Bear" Fredericks Signed Hopi Mastop 12" Katsina
We are offering a vintage dated 1972 Mastop Katsina/Kachina Cottonwood Doll, hand crafted and signed by noted Hopi carver Oswald "White Bear" Fredericks (1905-1996). One of his accomplishments was the carving of the Goldwater Kachina Collection which now resides at the Heard Museum in Phoenix. His second major accomplishment was collecting oral histories of Hopi people. These oral histories were the basis of Frank Waters' "Book of the Hopi". This doll is an excellent example of Fredericks' work, with exceptional attention down to the finest detail: note the shell ears, cornhusk neckscarf and meticulous multicolor brushstrokes to kilt and feet. The Mastop Kachina is the second kachina to appear on Third Mesa. He is not present on Second or First Mesa. In excellent condition. Paint is all original with with minimal wear and virtually no loss as shown. No breaks or missing pieces. The finest details are intact - extremely well cared for! Stands 12" tall.
