11 1/2" Tall Early 1900's Hopi Indian Chakwaina Katsina
We are offering a vintage early 1900's Hopi Chakwaina Indian Katsina/Kachina Cottonwood Doll. An earlier doll, has the "belly-ache" hands. Chakwaina is usually depicted as an ogre, with ferocious teeth and a black goatee and black mask with yellow eyes and is spread throughout Pueblo culture; it is often associated with the Asa Clan. In very good condition. No breaks or loss. Paint is all original with minimal signs of wear. Retains original hanging string. Minor traces of missing feathers on the top of head. Measures 11 1/2" tall (excluding base). From the collection of Wendell Gates (1911-2000), professor of art at San Jose State, purchased circa 1944-45 while residing in Denver, Colorado. Tag reads "Old Hopi Indian Shiles? Collection".
