9 3/4" Tall Early 1900's Hopi Indian Malo Katsina
We are offering a vintage early 1900's Hopi Indian Malo Katsina/Kachina Cottonwood Doll, arms attached to the body in a formal pose. He appears at Angkwa (Summer Dances) and the Mixed Dances. His dance is a prayer for rain and good crops. In very good condition. No breaks or loss. There is a small sliver out of the back of head (probably in the making) and a tight line running down from it on the shoulder. Some flaking, chipping and alligatoring to the paint as shown. Retains original hanging string. Partial loss to feathers on the top and back of the head. Please study the photos as they are a part of the description. Measures 9 3/4" tall (excluding base). From the collection of Wendell Gates (1911-2000), professor of art at San Jose State, purchased circa 1944-45 while residing in Denver, Colorado.
